Luke 5:31
Support our partners in providing compassionate healthcare for people living on Mount Meru.
Nkoaranga Hospital
Located in the Central District, Nkoaranga Hospital is the only hospital in the Diocese of Meru. The hospital provides in-patient, out-patient and emergency care with a strong emphasis on orthopedics and primary care, complemented by palliative care sponsored by Gilchrist Cares. Recent renovations include adding a maternity wing with plans for an emergency room with the next expansion.
Orphanage at Nkoaranga Hospital
The Diocese of Meru is responsible for taking care of orphans from birth to age seven. Many of the children were born at Nkoaranga Hospital, who lost their mother during childbirth or whose family did not have the resources to care for them.
Leguruki Health Center
Established as a health center in 2019, Leguruki started as a dispensary in 1938. The health center has a maternity ward and operating center, and can accommodate brief overnight patient stays.
Dispensaries
The Diocese of Meru operates two dispensaries, which are similar to U.S. urgent care facilities. Kikatiti Dispensary is located in the Southern District and Ngarenanyuki Dispensary is located in the Northern District. Dispensaries provide primary care and immunizations. Ngarenanyuki also provides minor surgical procedures, maternity and birthing care, and brief overnight patient stays.
HIV Support Group
The HIV Support Group maintains a chicken hatchery to raise funds that help support members living with HIV. Chicks are raised for eggs, to sell or as protein for their diets.

Based in Hunt Valley Maryland, Gilcrist Cares is linking end-of-life care organizations in 17 U.S. states with programs in 10 countries in Africa. Through Gilchrist’s International Partnership with Nkoaranga Lutheran Hospital’s Hospice and Palliative Care program in Meru, Tanzania, the two organizations share information and wisdom, exploring each other’s medical and cultural practices.

Dr. Heinz Giering, an anesthesiologist and emergency physician from Nuremberg, traveled through northern Tanzania in 1998. His first stop was the Usa River Rehabilitation Center (URRC). Then as now, disabled young people are trained there to lead independent lives. What was initially planned as a one-time relief effort has become a permanent institution with great success. Funded by donations, it is a means of helping people help themselves. Patients with orthopedic conditions, bone fractures, and general surgical conditions are now treated at Nkoaranga Hospital throughout the year. This is made possible by the training and continuing education of local doctors funded by the Fire Children Project. To break the cycle of poverty, people in this poor country are particularly dependent on the functionality of their legs. Only when someone can walk is it possible to attend school, receive an education, and earn a living.
